A Brow Lift is a surgical procedure that lifts the area directly above the eye, resulting in an ‘opening up’ of the eye area and a more youthful and refreshed appearance. The surgeon lifts the brow, tightens the muscles and removes any loose skin and excess fatty tissue from the areas. Brow lift surgery is usually performed for cosmetic reasons only, however brows and eyelids that droop can affect vision, so undergoing this procedure can be a simple and welcomed solution to this problem. Brow lift surgery can be carried out as a stand alone treatment or combined with other rejuvenation surgery such as Face Lifts, Eyelid Surgery and fat transfer.
The surgeon makes small incisions behind the hairline an inserts an endoscope (a very thin camera device which is connected to a TV monitor) through each incision to see the muscles and tissues beneath the skin. By carefully releasing forehead tissue from the underlying bone and the careful cutting of muscles that cause the central frown lines, the skin on the forehead becomes tightened and elevated.
There are two types of Brow Lift. ‘Open’ and ‘Endoscopic’. If an open Brow Lift is the most suitable procedure for you, the surgeon makes a small incision from one ear along from the hairline to your other ear. For patients with a receding hair line or baldness, the incision can most usually be hidden in one of your natural forehead creases. The surgeon then carefully separates the skin on the upper part of your face from the tissue beneath and then either reduces and/or tightens the muscles. Your skin is then pulled and stitched/clipped into place with any excess skin being removed.
If an Endoscopic Brow Lift is the most suitable procedure for you, the surgeon makes approximately 3 – 5 small incisions in various parts of the scalp, through which a thin plastic tube that holds a minute camera at one end is inserted. The images that are taken from the camera are sent to a TV screen which the surgeon views and this allows them to then operate on the fatty tissue and muscles found behind the hairline. Your eyebrows are elevated and held in position with stitches or temporary screws hidden behind the hairline.
How Long does the Procedure take?
Brow Lift Surgery takes approximately 1.5 hours to perform.
What Anaesthetic is available?
Brow Lift surgery can be performed either under General Anaesthetic or Local Anaesthetic with/without IV Sedation and is normally a day case procedure, which means you are not required to stay overnight in hospital. You can discuss which Anaesthetic options are most suitable for you at your initial consultation with the surgeon.
The majority of patients find that Brow Lift can make a huge difference to their overall appearance and produces a more youthful and elevated look.
Factors to Consider
Before undergoing any surgery, be sure to speak to your surgeon about the type of results you are expecting.
What is the Recovery Period?
Although Brow Lift surgery is a straightforward procedure, you will need to take 5-10 days off to rest, but please discuss this with your surgeon at your initial consultation. Your recovery time will be faster if you opt to have your surgery under local anaesthetic with/without light sedation as opposed to general anaesthetic.
